88 Detroit Public Schools Closed Today Because Teachers Refuse To Work In Disgusting Work Conditions
Detroit public school teachers have called in sick for today, Wednesday, in order to bring attention to the deplorable classroom conditions and lack of funding that the school district is making them work in. The teachers have forced the school district to close 88 schools for the day.
Michigan’s largest school district has been in the press for its ongoing problems with unsafe campuses and its lack of funding for basic classroom necessities. Textbooks, among other things, are just not affordable in this school district.
Teachers started calling in sick Tuesday night. All other staff members were still required to report for work.
By 6 a.m on Wednesday, the list of schools closed increased to 68. By 10 a.m, a total of 88 schools were closed for the day.
“Things have been happening for so long, and I think teachers felt like they had no voice. We realized that nobody is coming to save us, so we have to save ourselves.” – Lacetia Walker, an instructional specialist in special education for DPS
Dangerous and unhealthy conditions at the Detroit public schools have cast an national spotlight on the district. Many have taken to social media to expose the horrific working conditions in the schools.
