US Woman Detained For Allegedly Insulting The Arab Emirates

According to The National, a government-owned newspaper in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, a 25-year-old American woman has been detained on misdemeanor charges for insulting the United Arab Emirates in public. She was apparently waiting for a taxi at the Abu Dhabi International Airport when the incident took place.

She has been under arrest since Feb. 23. The woman was waiting for her taxi when two unknown men approached her and spoke to her in an inappropriate manner. It was quoted that she said that she “refused to engage with them and nothing happened.”
She requested from the court to pay a fine and be released from jail. Her verdict date is May 2nd.

The U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi is aware of the case and is providing consular services to her. Yet it is unknown if she’ll be jailed until May 2nd.

The UAE isn’t like most countries. Defamation is treated as a criminal act rather than a civil matter. And those charges can carry a prison sentence with steep fines.
