When Social Media Became Aware Of This Autistic Girls’ Humble Request, They Responded In A Touching Way
Have you ever had a favorite article of clothing that is either discoloring or ripping at the seams, and you wish that you had purchased 2 items, instead of 1? Well, I’ve taken care of that little problem. Now, I purchase as many as I can afford of various colors; so that that, will never, ever occur again.
Well, Deborah Grimshaw Skouson ran into the issue of a favorite top almost becoming unwearable; except that the top was not hers, but her daughter Cami’s. You see, Cami has autism, and the top has been a favorite of hers, ever since she was in kindergarten. The floral top was originally purchased at Target but has been discontinued for 5 years. Thankfully, her mom was able to purchase it 4 additional times, mainly through eBay; but unfortunately, she got to the point that she could no longer find it, anywhere.
So, what does one do now, in the age of social media? Deborah, did the best thing that she knew how, and she petitioned through Facebook, to see if any of her friends had one available.
Ms. Skouson wrote:
“Okay friends and family, I need your help! As most of you know, my daughter Cami has autism. For the past 4-5 years, she has been fixated on THIS shirt.
She got her first one in kindergarten 5 years ago, and we have found 4 more since then, mostly on eBay. Her current one is almost unwearable, and eBay has gone dry.
This shirt is a CIRCO brand from TARGET. They were sold in 2011-2012. This is where you come in. We need another “pink flower shirt”, so will you please share this post or even just the photo?
We will pay for the shirt and the shipping if someone would be kind enough to sell it to us. It has to be this exact shirt! We’ve tried similar shirts, and they don’t cut it with Cami! 🙂
Thank you so much!! (any size is great!)”
So, as with all things on social media that move people’s emotions and garner the gift of giving—her original post was shared thousands of times but was quickly picked up by Facebook’s popular page, “Love What Matters”, where it was shared an additional 13,000 times.
Not surprising, Ms. Skouson updated her post:
“I am so grateful for the kindness that my daughter has been shown!
I made this post a week ago in the hopes of finding a few shirts for backup. Cami adores this shirt, and it brings her a lot of comfort and security, which is sometimes hard for her to come by in her chaotic little world. She doesn’t wear it all the time, but likes to put it on after school, and she wears it to bed as a pajama shirt.
At last count, we are at 78 shirts, and I’ve had many offer to make her teddy bears, pillows, blankets, and other keepsakes out of the extras.
These are all total strangers. People are inherently good and kind, and I’m glad I’ve been able to be a recipient of that kindness.
May God bless you all!”
Praise God! What a wonderful blessing it was for Cami and her mom to receive from the goodness of people’s hearts.
Even Target is trying to get in contact with them!
We wish both Cami and her mom, many blessings!
