New Hope For A Fulfilling Life
Bentley Yoder was born with a brain outside his skull because of the rare condition called cranium bifidum. Doctors told his parents, Sierra and Dustin, that Bentley was simply ‘incompatible with life.’
Bentley’s parents refused to embrace the idea that their child wouldn’t get a fair shot at life. They decided to move on with the pregnancy. They wanted to see Bentley and to hold him before saying goodbye. To everyone’s surprise, Bentley was born with life on October 31, 2015. He developed normally like any other baby would, but one thing was still on the back of everyone’s mind. His brain was still outside of his skull, something that made no sense to the medical community.
Four months into his life, Bentley’s parents started to seek help for their son. There just had to be a way to relocate Bentley’s brain back inside his skull.
Dr. John Meara at Boston Children’s Hospital was the doctor who stepped up to the task. He planned and practiced the pending procedure using 3D-printed models and on May 24th the surgery took place. Six hours later, it was deemed a full success.
