15 Fingers And 16 Toes
A 3-month old baby with the nickname HongHong, from a rural part of China, was born with an extreme genetic condition- he has 15 fingers and 16 toes. The condition baby HongHong has is called polydactyly, and the surgery can be expensive tricky to perform. The family is concerned that even if they came up with the money for the surgery, it would be almost a miracle for it to go as planned.
HongHong’s mother has polydactyly as well, though her case isn’t as extreme, she has an extra digit on each hand. Knowing that, she tried to take all the necessary preventative prenatal steps. She underwent several scans prior to the birth to which doctors assured her that everything looked normal and that no deformities were detected. Despite the precautions she took, they found out differently after her baby was born.
Polydactyly generally is not considered a very rare genetic disorder since it affects 2 out of 1,000 kids. But to have so many extra digits, as with HongHong’s case is quite exceptional.
