California Will Be Allowing Birth-Control Pills Without Needing A Prescription
California might be the first state in which women can acquire birth control from a pharmacist without a prescription!
Proponents of the new law argue that this option will give younger women easier access to the product. However, not all professionals share the same viewpoint as these lawmakers.
Doctors like gynecologist Kathleen Valenton have this to say:
“I think that’s very dangerous. Birth-control pills are not the only way you can prevent pregnancy, and they definitely don’t prevent STDs,”
Under the new rules in California and Oregon, all women have to do is consult their pharmacist and fill out a brief questionnaire. They are then given birth control right there and then.
Many of the details of the law are still being worked out in Sacramento. The new law will take effect in March.
