Deuteronomy 15:11 – There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land.

This video is a powerful reminder to count your blessings. Women in Haiti work day and night to make sure their children have something in their stomach. They purchase a “batter” that consists of dirt mixed with very little vegetable shortening, salt, and occasionally sugar. The children in the video were confused about why the cameras cared so much to know about what they were eating. To the children in Haiti, it is normal to eat these cookies. The adults were ashamed to eat them in front of the camera and decided to hide away. One woman explains how it breaks her heart to give these cookies to her children; but, she would rather give them something than nothing.

This is heartbreaking. Just when you think you have nothing in life, you learn about so many more less fortunate human beings. Those of us who live in first world countries, truly are blessed and many of us continue to demand more. Please, take the time to reevaluate your heart, to be thankful, and to pray for those who have close to nothing.

The Godfruits takeaway: These people are blessed because they surely have a place in heaven. May we all learn to live a simple life and share our blessings. Greater blessings mean greater responsibilities. Greedy and cruel people are always there, we cannot avoid them; however, we who are aware can make a difference, even in our own little ways.
