Christian The Lion Holds An Iconic Story!
Christian, a tiny lion cub, was legally purchased by two young men—John Rendall and Ace Bourke—in 1969 at Harrods pet department. His home thereafter took place on Kings Road, located in Chelsea, UK. He slept in a basement that belonged to a furniture store and spent his days out in the public due to his popularity; everyone loved Christian to the point where he could eat in restaurants! However, he grew in size very quickly and his owners knew that he could not stay there forever.
Christian’s life took a new turn when he met Animal Rights Activists Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna, who transferred him to their home in Surrey. There, he spent his days and nights in a compound and their caravan until 1970, when he was moved to the motherland of his ancestors in Kenya.
About a year later, John and Ace flew out to visit Christian, who was already the leader of his own pride. Despite being told that Christian would not remember his owners, the happy lion excitedly ran toward and hugged them both in the heartwarming reunion.
“He ran towards us, threw himself onto us, knocked us over and hugged us, with his paws on our shoulders,” recalls John Rendall.
