Drink In Moderation
Jesus Christ did drink wine, in fact, his first miracle was turning water into wine! Jesus did not preach against the use of wine; instead he did like most other Jews of his day. He drank wine in moderation.
The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ – Luke 7:34
Paul instructed Timothy, “Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine [oinos] because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses”- 1 Timothy 5:23. Wine is like a double edge sword. It will rinse your body clean of illnesses, but it can also destroy your precious temple.
In today’s world wine is almost as if it were a thing of the past. It has been replaced with more stronger and dangerous beverages. It is up to each Christian to be their own judge on how frequently they consume such drinks. A wine glass here and there is actually really good for the body. It is a known fact that wine helps boost your immune system’s defenses because it contains the very special antioxidant resveratrol.
Why God Hates Drunkenness
Drunkenness is a very dangerous thing. It can give birth to every vile thing that God hates like: violence, abuse, disorder. Drunkenness destroys families and has claimed an unimaginable amount of lives throughout the centuries. More than 10 percent of U.S. children live with a parent with alcohol problems.
Both the Old and New Testaments contain many examples and commands against excessive use of alcohol and drunkenness. Drunkenness is listed as one of the works of the flesh in Galatians 5:21.
envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. – Galatians 5:21
It is for our own benefit that God condemns extreme use of alcohol. According to the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), Alcohol contributes to over 200 diseases and injury-related health conditions, most notably alcohol dependence, liver cirrhosis, cancers, and injuries. In 2012, 5.1 percent of the burden of disease and injury worldwide (139 million disability-adjusted life years) was attributable to alcohol consumption.
Globally, alcohol misuse is the fifth leading risk factor for premature death and disability.
God asks us to abstain from the excess consumption of alcohol not because it’s some random unknown reason, but because we are better off without it. God bless!
