Cell phones have become a major part of our everyday lives, these days, we tend to store just about everything on the device. For teens especially, it is practically an access point between themselves and the rest of the world. That is why when one Father from North Texas, Ronald Jackson, decided to take away his 12-year-old daughter’s cell phone, not only was he criticized for his decision he was actually arrested for it.
After discovering rude messages on his daughter’s I-Phone 4, he decided to go right for the most important thing in her life. When he told his daughters mother about the decision, she criticized him but didn’t really mention how much of an issue she actually had. So when police showed up at his home asking for the phone, Jackson was shocked. He flat out refused. How dare they try and interfere with raising his own child?
The police left for the time being, but that wasn’t the end of the situation. A few months later he received a citation in the mail for theft. Flabbergasted that the situation had gone so far, Jackson opted for a jury trial. They offered Jackson a plea deal if he would agree to give the phone back, but instead he hired an attorney and prepared to take both the mother Michelle Steppe, along with his own daughter to trial.
The case was quietly moved to a different location which caught Jackson unaware, that’s when an arrest warrant was issued and Jackson was handcuffed and taken to jail. Jacksons Defense Attorney John Cooke told KHOU, “I’ve never seen anything like it, you would think we were on the Jerry Springer Show.”
After a two-day trial, Jackson was found not guilty, the jury saying, there was not enough evidence to prove the theft charge. Unfortunately, the whole situation has caused a big rift between the father and daughter. “It made no sense to me for them to show up and make a big deal out of something that was a small thing,” Jackson said. “I couldn’t believe they would go to this extent for a cell phone. It didn’t seem right. I just have to separate myself from them.”
