Friends Pay Tribute
16-year-old student Catherine Malatesta couldn’t wait to go to her junior prom, but there was something plaguing her that she knew could make it a big possibility that she wouldn’t be able to attend. Cathrine was fighting a battle with a life-threatening illness, stage 4 cancer.
Catherine was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and was released from the hospital the night before her prom.
“She turned to me and said, ‘Mom, for the first time in a long time, I actually feel beautiful,’It was such a lovely moment and I was so happy that she felt like that for one day. It was a special, special night for all of us.”– her mother, Jennifer Goodwin
Catherine did everything possible to make sure she lived and savored every moment of her life. From joining numerous sports teams, to participating in student council she tried everything she could to make the most of her remaining time. Sadly, she passed away 2 months after her prom.
Catherine’s mother invited her daughter’s friends to take what they wanted as a memory of their beloved friend. When they saw the prom dress, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. Catherine’s friends decided they would wear the dress to their proms as a special honor for their friend.
“For a parent who has lost a child, the hardest part is you think people are going to forget about them. It’s important for the parent to keep that spirit alive. The fact that this group of girls wants to do this on their own just helps me to grieve and helps me to move forward.”
