This is the story of an unlikely friendship between a Patagonian Penguin and a 71-year-old retired bricklayer named Joao Pereira de Souza. Their 4-year friendship first began when the penguin he named Dindim, was rescued by Pereira de Souza when he initially found him covered in oil and starving. After helping him recover, the penguin never forgot the kindness he was shown by the man, and now for 8 months of every year he visits Joao, traveling up to 5,000 miles everytime just to say hello.
When Dindim the Magellanic penguin, isn’t visiting his friend he is usually spending his time breeding in Patagonia off the coast of Argentina and Chile. Joao patiently awaits for the return of his friend at his small shanty home on the coast of southeast Brazil.
Mr. Pereira de Souza told Globo TV, “I love the penguin like it’s my own child and I believe the penguin loves me.” The fisherman in the area say they’ve never seen anything like it before. Mario Castro, another local fisherman says, “The funniest thing is, the penguin might stay here for a week and then he walks down to the beach, and leaves,” but he always returns to the same house where his friend eagerly awaits.
