Sarah Ray, a paramedic from Tennessee, had just said “I Do” when she got a call she just could not ignore.
On October 3, 2015 she and her husband, who is also a paramedic, rushed to the scene where her grandparents and father were involved in a car accident just two miles away from the church while on their way to their reception. A driver speeding and running a red light had crashed into her family.
Ray’s mother was able to capture the powerful photo of her while the ambulance’s lights flash behind her and as the rain trickled down.

Ray tells Channel 5.
“My family comes in from out of town and this happened. I was scared on the way there.”
Sarah’s mother, Marcy Martin, tells Channel 5,
“I love this photo because it shows her character and accentuates her beauty.”
Although no-one was seriously injured, Ray’s grandmother was sent to the hospital for evaluation.
While people are calling Ray a hero, she says that anyone in her position would have done the same.
“Anybody in the EMS field would’ve done the same thing. I don’t know that what I did was special,” she says.
“I was just making sure my family was okay … I just happened to be in a wedding dress.”
Ray says the photo made her laugh,
“I know the face that I’m giving my mom was the ‘Really, mom? Right now you’re taking a picture?’ ” she went on to say. “I’m sure we were a sight on the side of the road for people driving by.”
