WWII Flight Engineer Is Reunited With His Purple Heart

WWII veteran flight engineer, Wiljo Matalakami, lost his Purple Heart Medal near Wawina, Minn. in the 90’s. Never did he think he would be reunited with his treasure. That is, until Tammi Heart set out to search the rightful owner of the Purple Heart that her mother had found in a dumpster.

“It’s such a beautiful thing and it represents someone who died and we were both very sad that someone would throw that out and we figured it couldn’t be on purpose. It had to be an accident that they threw it out.”

During the war, Matalakami was presumed dead after his B-24 bomber was shot down near the coast of Germany in 1944.
