Mothers and Mothers-To-Be Go Through An Extraordinary Brain Change
When a child grows in a mother-to-be, her brain goes through an amazing change. Females are wired so that when they are to expect a child, their instincts guide them more into a protective mindset. Their brain changes in order to prioritize the well-being of the baby. The mother’s gray matter becomes more concentrated. Activity increases in regions that control empathy, anxiety, and social interaction.
Even after childbirth, a woman’s brain continues to change. According to LiveScience, moms see a growth in gray matter in brain areas like the hypothalamus, amygdala, parietal lobe and prefrontal cortex. Regions of the brain that are responsible for emotion, reasoning, judgment, become amplified.
Here we see how similar the brain of a new mother is to that of someone ‘falling in love’. In a way, motherhood is like a secret garden in a woman’s brain just waiting to be discovered.
